My Dear Little Ruth

I have received several nice letters from you so I guess I had better get busy and answer them. Now I guess I will tell you what I am going to have for dinner and see if you don’t think it sounds good – boiled potatoes, beef steak, bread and butter, coffee, doughnuts and watermelon. The watermelon is one that got cracked and the storekeeper gave it to us and I wish you folks were here to help eat it. Say Ruth, I want you to get that brother of yours by the neck and tell him to write to his Daddy. He is a regular old slow poke when it comes to writing don’t you think so?

Uncle Bill got hurt yesterday while working. An auto with two drunk people ran into the back of his streetcar and when he got out to get their names they ran into him getting away. He called up the police and gave the license number and it was not long till they were caught and arrested. Uncle Bill was bruised up some but not hurt bad — only his feelings.

I am working a 2-piece day run today, I went to work this morning at 6:50 and worked till 9 o’clock and I go again at 12:35 and get thru at 6:35. Don’t forget to tell me what things you make from the drawings in the Girl Scout book. Have you picked any hazelnuts yet? Remember I would like a little box of them as soon as they are ripe. Well Ruth, I hope I get a nice long letter from you about Tuesday so by-by till next time with love from Daddy

Dear Ruth,

Say Ruth, Daddy could not wait till today to open my birthday presents so I peeked at them yesterday. I think the pocket book you sent is just fine and how did you know just the kind I liked best? I have it in my pocket right now so thanks a lot for it.

Jack is making my birthday dinner as I sit here in the big chair writing. We will have potatoes, eggs, scrambled with bacon, bread and butter and honey and coffee, Did mamma get the new screen door up so you can use it? If you can just set it in place and fasten it I will soon be there to put the hinges and things on it. Say Ruth, it is so hot here that my hand sweats and sticks to the paper.

Well, I must get ready for work so by-by till July

Love from Daddy. Answer soon, quick, hurry, hustle.

My Dear Ruth Ann

Well I bet you made some nice May baskets and I hope the flowers will soon be out so you can pick some. I sent the candy for to kind of fill the baskets till the flowers come.

I still have the Easter eggs you youngsters colored I think they are pretty. Have you uncovered the round flower bed in the front yard yet?

I hope you write and tell me some of the things Mitzi does. Does the old cat still slap her or have they made friends?

Say Ruth if you send me the names of some library books you would like to read I will try and get them for you.

Well Ruth I don’t know of any more news except that I would like to be up there with you and I hope it won’t be long till I’ll be seeing you, Lots of love and kisses from your Daddy.

Write often.

My dear little Ruth

Thanks a lot for my pretty may basket and letter and as soon as you find some wild flowers you can press them and send them to me. Say Ruth I will look for the paper you asked for and will send it later.

Tell mamma that I forgot John’s gopher trap. I just thought of it now. So I guess I had better write those things down so I won’t forget them again. The rain you had will make things grow fast now if it will only warm up.

Has Mitzi got over being afraid of the rake since it hit her on the tail? Has the old cat made friends with the puppy yet?

Say Ruth, mamma asked me to get garden seed but I can not find the list so will you ask her to write it down again. Well I guess I had better get back to work so by-by

with lots of love from Daddy

My Dear Ruth

I will write a few lines to let you know how I am getting along. I am fine except my leg is pretty sore and swollen but I am working so everything is O.K. I was just in and had the Dr. put a new patch on it. He called me a lame duck just in fun.

Say Washington’s birthday kind of upset our mail. I thought I would get a letter and package today from you folks but no mail was delivered. I have quite a few things ready to send but am waiting till I can send my clothes up at the same time.

It is thawing quite a lot here today but the sun is not shining much its kind of hazy like.

Gee, I hope you get the rest of the pictures taken so I can see them It will help me some to even see your pictures as it’s so lonesome here without you folks but it won’t be long now till I’ll be seeing you. by-by with lots of love from Daddy.

My dear Ruth,

I wish I could just step in and surprize you folks this afternoon. Our snowstorm has stopped and it’s growing colder. Is the old Ford pretty well covered with snow? If you could brush the snow off of it before it thaws it will help to keep the top in good shape, but better to just use the broom to do it with so as not to tear the cloth.

Say Ruth, the next time you bake a cake will you just wrap up a piece and slip it into the package for I would sure like a sample. The candy you sent was great and I still have one piece of it left.

Say Ruthie, you and John will soon be going to school again and I wish you would promise Daddy that you will go and come together as long as the cold weather lasts and if the snow is still deep I believe you had better go around by the road.

Love from Daddy

Dear Ruth,

Well Ruth, the ground was all white with snow when I got up but the sun has come out warm and nice so I guess it won’t last long. Did the snow you got last Wednesday stay or did it not. I am glad you got such good marks on your report card. Are your glasses all right since you got them fixed? He put in a new bow on one side and soldered the other one where it had commenced to break. If I don’t forget I am going down and get the pictures from the roll of film you sent and I will send them in this letter. I saw Mavis [Ruth’s cousin] yesterday and she said she would write to you.

Sat. when I went to work I laid my overcoat on the bench and when I went to get it I found a pair of gloves in the pocket and I thought that was funny for I had them in my lunch box. Then I looked and saw that some one had taken my coat and left his so I just wore it until I got in and then and then I found the fellow who had mine and he had been looking all over for his gloves. So then we traded back again. He had grabbed my coat by mistake as they both looked alike and were laying side by side. Well Ruth, I’ll look for a letter soon.

Love, Daddy

My Dear Little Ruth,

Today is Saturday and I suppose you and Mother and John will go to town. It was raining this morning when I got up but it is noon now and the sun is shining bright and it is real warm and I have my window open. I made pancakes for breakfast then I washed the dishes and made the bed, and after that I washed the floor and have everything spic and span for Sunday. If my work is so I can I am going to church tomorrow. I got the package from Mother this morning and those cookies are sure going to taste good for dinner and I am cooking squash and I guess I’ll fry a couple of eggs to go with it. My squash was as big as the one you got and only cost 10 cents and I got 3 bunches of carrots for 50 cents.

I am working a run on Selby-Lake tonight and I chiseled a day run there yesterday so have had 2 good days in a row.

Say Ruth, my squash is most done now and I wish you would hand me the potato masher, as I haven’t anything to mash it with. I saw Uncle Bill the other day and they are all well and Mary Jane and Carol and Richard are all going to school and Billy is still selling vegetables from the truck so they’re getting along all right. Say Ruth, tell Mama to be sure and send “Smokey”, as they have asked me about it at the station. Well I don’t think of anything more to write so by-by with lots of love and here’s a big Kiss.

Daddy.

My Dear Ruth,

Well I wish you could have seen Daddy trying to make an apple pie. I got the crust all mixed but when I tried to roll it out it wanted to wrap around the rolling pin and then it stuck to the board so I could hardly get it in the pan, but I finally got more flour on it and the pie tasted pretty good. I wish you were here to help me eat it. Did you find the package of gum I sent in the box of curtains? Say Ruth and momma, finish that roll of film. I would like to see what that bunch of pictures is like.

(Thurs. A.M.)

I just got a letter from momma and she said you have been sick the same as John. I am sorry and hope by now you are feeling fine again. I have a cold sore on my nose and a big water blister on my thumb where I touched the hot stove so I am using salve today. Do you let the old kitty sleep in the house nights? If not, fix her a nice box in the wood-shed, cover it over and just leave a place big enough for her to get in.

Well Ruth, this is all the news for now, write soon.

Love from Daddy

My dear little Ruth,

Well Ruth I hope next Sunday is a nice day and all of us, will be together but today is not so nice here. It rained this morning and it is still cloudy and dark and it is almost noon. The sun came out and shone a few minutes but has hid behind the clouds again.

Oh Ruth I found you a dandy dinner pail that matches your new coat and it has a nice little tray in the top where you can carry pie, cake or cookies and have the sandwiches in the lower part. It cost $3.50 and is well made. Daddy made himself a rice pudding yesterday. Wish you could have been here to help me eat it, as the rice swelled so much that I had to have two dishes to bake it in. I am having baked potato, biscuits and honey, and bacon for dinner. I have the potatoes in the oven now and will stop and make the biscuits, they will all be done at the same time. I changed the sheets and pillow case on my bed and got out my clean towel, dish towel and dish cloth so everything is spick and span around here. Well Ruth I can not think of any more news so by by with lots of love.

Daddy
